Epistle to the Hebrews

John S. Torell

The Epistle to the Hebrews Part 1: Jesus is the CreatorThe epistle to the Hebrews was never given an author in the Bible and it is left that the author is unknown. My personal belief is that the apostle Paul wrote this epistle (letter) and I base this upon the way it is written: its theology and the elegance by which it was written. Regardless of who people think wrote this letter, it is a master piece of Biblical theology and it was accepted into the Bible by the second-generation leaders around 100 A.D.

Paul began this letter by stating that Jesus is the Creator, which the Jewish leadership at that time and since that time continues to refuse to accept. Jewish theology teaches that there will be a messiah in the future, but that it will be a man anointed by God. Judaism reject that God is triune.

Paul then continued and set forth why God was displeased with the 12 tribes of Israel, when they were in the wilderness. It was unbelief and complaining that turned God against them. Once Paul established these facts, he started to discuss salvation and that the Christian churches needed to move on beyond the basics and should start to mature and teach the deeper things of God.

The next subject that Paul dealt with was about the priesthood. He pointed out that Jesus is a priest after the order of Melchisedec, the king of Salem and the high priest of God, who met Abraham and the latter gave tithe unto him. Despite that Mary, the mother of the physical body of Jesus was from the tribe of Judah, the priesthood has moved from Levi and evolved into the priesthood of Melchizedek. Thus, Jesus is a high priest forever.

Paul made it clear, that the First Covenant that God made with the people of Israel, while they were in the wilderness does, not exist anymore. It has been replaced by the Second Covenant of which Jesus is the high priest. Thus, there is no more need for a temple in Jerusalem and daily sacrifices, since Jesus in the final sacrifice which has been accepted by the Father in heaven.

The classic teaching of faith is a must for every Christian to read and understand. Paul hammers it down, that without faith a Christian cannot please God. He also dealt with discipline, when God is chastising His people when they sin. Paul ended his epistle with this eternal statement: “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and today, and for ever.”

The epistle to the Hebrews is a “must-read” for every believer in Christ.
