The Early Church

The New Testament Part 13

How did we get the New Testament? What was the role of the Holy Spirit and the Christian leaders in preserving the writings of the apostles? What was connection of Mark and Luke to the early church leadership?

Mark abandoned Barnabas and Paul on a missionary trip, but later redeemed himself as both Peter and Paul mentioned finding him useful. Luke was a physician who interviewed those who knew Jesus well and traveled with Paul until the apostle’s death. There was no central church leadership before AD 325 and the Holy Spirit moved upon different bishops throughout the Roman Empire to collect copies of the gospels and epistles, which eventually grew to number twenty-seven books of the New Testament.

Over time these writings were accepted as scripture by the church. The Bible we have today is precious because it represents God’s preserved word and serves as a spiritual anchor for the doctrine of the New Testament church.
