EARTH – GOD’S UNIVERSITY OF FAITH

PART 6: YOU SHALL NOT KILL (COMMIT MURDER)

RLJ-690

JOHN S. TORELL

NOVEMBER 14, 1999

YOU SHALL NOT KILL

“You shall not kill.” Exodus 20:13

The Hebrew word in this commandment is “ratsach,” which means “to dash in pieces.” To translate this into English, the translator must look at how the word is used in the Hebrew language. The proper translation into English is “murder” or “put to death.” This commandment was given to individuals, but it also applies to a nation.

God established the death penalty for a person or an animal who killed a human being long before Moses received The Law. Genesis 9:5-6

God detailed it more to Moses. Exodus 21:12-36

An individual did not have the right to execute justice; it was to be done through a court of law. Numbers 35:29-34

God does not want a lawless society. Romans 13:1-7

Does a Christian have the right to defend himself and his loved ones? Genesis 14:11-24; 1 Samuel 30:1-20

Jesus enlarged the sixth commandment. Matthew 5:21-26

You can spiritually kill a person by destroying his reputation. Proverbs 6:16-19

Murder, war and destruction are created by the tongue. James 3:1-10

The tongue speaks that which is in the heart (soul). Matthew 15:10-20

Slander, back biting and gossip bring death to a person – Rom.1:28-32

There is only one remedy – repentance – 1 John 1:4-10

Remember, it’s not so important how you begin your life after salvation, but how you finish it!
