PART 11: AGAPE LOVE

RLJ-696

JOHN S. TORELL

DECEMBER 26, 1999

AGAPE LOVE
After studying the subjects of OBEDIENCE and MORALITY, we are going to investigate the subject of love. In the English language, we basically only have one word for “love.” This is used to say that we love God or love a person, but it is also used for “I love ice cream” and “I love that suit.” The New Testament was written in Greek and it has several words which express the feeling of love.

AGAPAO
Agapao is a verb and “agape” is a noun which means the kind of love that God has for people, strong enough to send his only begotten Son to die for us (Romans 5:6-10). The old English word for this kind of love is charity as found in 1 Corinthians Chapter 13.

THELO
The Greek word for “I love to visit you” is “thelo.” Mark 12:38

PHILEO
To love a person as a friend in Greek is “phileo” (John 11:3); love of brethren is “philadelphia” (Romans 10:12); love of money is “philarguriz” (1 Timothy 6:10); love of spouse or children is “philoteknos” (Titus 2:4); lover of husband is “philandros” (Titus 2:4); love toward man is “philantrophia” (Titus 3:4); and “eros” is the Greek word for sexual love.

LIVING IN GOD’S LOVE
To pass this class of AGAPE LOVE, each Christian must learn to love God above anything else!

1. Make sure that God is the only one in your life. Exodus 20:1-5; Matthew 22:34-38

2. Learn to love other people, particularly the church. This includes the people you have labeled as enemies. Matthew 22:39-40, 5:43-48; John 13:1-15,

3. Agape love will inspire you to witness and lead sinners to Christ.
Matthew 28:18-20

4. Agape love will inspire you to pray for the sick and cast out demons.
Luke 9:1, 10:1-3

5. Agape love will inspire you to love to obey Jesus Christ. John 14:15

TESTING YOUR LOVE
You may test yourself on a daily basis to see how you are doing in this class.
Galatians 5:22-25

The final written exam is found in 1 Corinthians chapter 13. If you can earnestly state that you have been able to fulfill this entire exam, you are ready to be tested by God for your final grade! Genesis 22:1-18

DO YOU NEED TO REPENT AND CORRECT YOUR ACTIONS?

Remember, it’s not so important how you begin your life after salvation, but how you finish it!

Do you have an ear to hear with?
