A NEW KING
The Godhead is not sentimental; the first king of Israel was relegated to the trash heap of history and Jesus asked Samuel how long he was going to mourn for Saul. 1 Samuel 16:1
Even though Samuel was a prophet and a judge, he was scared of Saul, who had become a bloodthirsty tyrant. Samuel was told to anoint the next king. verses 2-5
Jesse showed all of his sons to Samuel one by one. When the youngest ruddy boy was presented to Samuel, Jesus announced David would be the next king.1 verses 6-12
The Spirit of the Lord came upon David the moment he was anointed with oil. At the same time, the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul and was replaced with an evil spirit. verses 13-14
DAVID MEETS SAUL
Saul did not know that David had been anointed to be next king. He showed David hospitality and love. verses 15-23
DAVID AND GOLIATH
Despite the odds, David showed everyone that he was a warrior who was unafraid to take on the strongest enemy. verses 31-51
LOVE TO HATE
While Saul promoted David to be a military commander, he was also jealous and began to hate him. 1 Samuel 18:1-16
Lucifer was hovering over Saul and enticed him to give his daughter, Michal, as wife to David. verses 17-21
Lucifer introduced his old scheme of dirty politics and set up David to be killed by the Philistines. verses 22-30
HATE LEADS TO MURDER
Saul intent to murder David became an obsession. 1 Samuel 19:8-18
FEAR IS THE DOOR TO LIES
David fled from Saul to Nob. Instead of telling Ahimelech the truth, David lied to the priest and Lucifer now had an inroad to David that later would lead him to commit adultery and murder. 1 Samuel 21:1-15
SAUL SEALS HIS FATE
When Saul found out that Ahimelech had helped David, he went to Nob and murdered all the priests and their families. 1 Samuel 22:11-19
SAUL’S END
The end was drawing nigh for Saul. Samuel had died sometime earlier and Saul spent his final years hunting David even though God was protecting him.
The Philistines eventually mustered a large army to attack Saul and the army of Israel. Saul had been king for some 27 years and never experienced peace. Facing another Philistine invasion, Saul wanted to speak with Samuel even though he was dead.
Violating God’s commandment against necromancy, Saul visited the witch at Endor. The familiar spirit she conjured was the real soul of Samuel, who told Saul that he would die the next day with his sons on the field of battle.
Saul’s time on earth had come to an end. He started as a godly young man and ended his life as a murderer, liar, and worst of all, being rejected by God. 1 Samuel 28:4-19
The battle with the Philistines commenced the next day and Saul and his sons were killed along with many soldiers of Israel just as Samuel had prophesied from Paradise. 1 Samuel 31:1-10
SUMMARY
The Godhead paused the virtual time run to assess the situation.
• Lucifer was able to create destruction in Israel, tens of thousands of men had died in the different battles, and the moral standard in Israel was at a low point.
• Lucifer attacked David with a spirit of fear and made him into a liar.
• David led his band of 600 men in plundering Geshurite, Gezerite and Amalekite villages, killing men, women and children, and then lying about it.
• Ahimelech with many of his assistants had been murdered by Saul.
• The nation of Israel lay naked and wounded as the Philistines moved at will.
Lucifer clearly felt that he had won this round with the Godhead and he was ready to continue the slaughter under King David.
The Godhead recognized that in the next round it would not be enough for Jesus to intervene; the Holy Spirit had to begin changing the souls of men.
While it is true that King David would be the author of many mistakes, he would also be given the gift of repentance, and through the Holy Spirit he would create a songbook for Israel that was to become known as the Book of Psalms.
1. Ruddy means light skin/fair complexioned.
