THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW

PART 83: IT IS FINISHED

RLJ-1986

JOHN S. TORELL

OCTOBER 27, 2024

A FINAL DRINK
The God-man knew the redemptive work was just about finished. He was extremely dehydrated by this point from fatigue, loss of blood, and more than likely, the heat of the day. This is why He called out for something to drink. John 19:28

John records that this was yet another fulfillment of prophecy:
“They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.” (Psalms 69:21)

The vessel of vinegar was not the same drink offered to Jesus at the beginning of the crucifixion. It was probably brought by the Roman soldiers to enjoy while they waited for the inevitable end. A sponge was dipped into the container, put on a reed/hyssop branch, and extended to Jesus’ mouth because of the height difference. Matthew 27:48; Mark 15:36a; John 19:29-30a

The cruel and relentless mocking turned into morbid curiosity as the onlookers waited in vain for Elijah to appear and rescue the King of the Jews. Matthew 27:49; Mark 15:36b

“But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.

All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,

He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.

I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.

My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.

For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.

I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.

They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.

But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me.” (Psalm 22:6-8, 14-19)

IT IS FINISHED!
Jesus cried aloud a second time and left His lifeless body hanging on the cross.
Matthew 27:50; Mark 15:37

John recorded that Jesus stated, “It is finished.” Then God the Son left the physical body He inhabited because the redemptive work was done. John 19:30b

Luke noted that Jesus cried out a prayer in which He commended his Spirit to God the Father, and then departed, leaving the body hanging on the cross. Luke 23:46

It was finished. The redemptive work was done. Humanity had been redeemed. It was the end of the beginning! The plans made in eternity past were fulfilled. Revelation 13:8

This is the moment that the angels recognized with admiration the hidden wisdom of God. The same cannot be said for the fallen angels, who realized too late, the Godhead had outsmarted them. 1 Corinthians 2:6-8

The promise made to Adam 4,000 years earlier was satisfied. The heel of Jesus had been bruised, but the head of Lucifer had been crushed! Genesis 3:15

As God the Son exited His physical body, holy angels joyfully swept down from their positions in the sky and escorted Jesus to Paradise. Luke 23:42-43

The prophetic words of Jesus continued to be fulfilled.

“…the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,

And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise
again.” (Matthew 20:18-19)

Remember, it’s not so important how you begin your life after salvation, but how you finish it!
