Dr. Rick Warren proposes that his Purpose Driven Church movement is a New Reformation, the greatest paradigm shift in church government and message since Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the church in Wittenburg, Germany, on October 31, 1517.

Without doubt, the Purpose Driven Church has become a tremendous force in the world, but Noah Hutchings sees a dark side to this force.

Dr. Warren stated on May 23, 2005, at the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life: “The word `Fundamentalist’ actually comes from a document in the 1920s called the Five Fundamentals of the Faith. And it is a very legalistic, narrow view of Christianity.”

The five fundamentals of the faith to which Dr. Warren objected are:

The inerrancy and full authority of the Bible
The virgin birth and full Deity of Jesus Christ
The bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead
Christ’s atoning, vicarious death for the sins of the world
The literal Second Coming of Jesus Christ

The Purpose Driven Church religion at best is a distortion of the gospel; at worst, a repudiation of biblical, saving faith in Jesus Christ.

Noah Hutchings was a member of the second largest Baptist church in Oklahoma, where he had served for fifteen years. Then suddenly, his church converted to a Purpose Driven format. Being the president of a communications ministry, he has counseled with hundreds who have been disenfranchised from Purpose Driven churches by conscience or invitation. This is the other story about the Purpose Driven Life that some now reference as the “Purpose Driven Death.”

We are aware that Noah Hutchings is a hyper-dispensational, dual covenant teacher and pushes Cyrus Scofield’s interpretation of the Bible. However, we are choosing to carry his book since it does not promote these viewpoints and only deals with the heresies of The Purpose Driven Life and its affect on Southern Baptist churches.
