THE GOD OF THE OLD TESTAMENT
PART 3: THE LAWGIVER
RLJ-2038
JOHN S. TORELL
OCTOBER 26, 2025
JESUS IS THE LAWGIVER
Before Jesus was commissioned by God the Father to begin the current creation, the Godhead designed all the spiritual and physical laws and agreed how to create humanity.
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” (Genesis 1:26-27)
PHYSICAL LAWS
It is obvious there are physical laws which govern the earth, but also the universe with its stars, planets, solar systems, galaxies, clusters, and super clusters that are visible through our measuring instruments and telescopes.
“Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?
When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,
And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;
That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment. And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.
Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?
Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?
Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.
Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,
That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?” (Job 38:1-20)
During the 1,676 years before Noah’s flood, fallen angels educated mankind about physical laws so humanity could mine ore and refine it to construct copper and iron weapons.
In the 6,000 years since the creation of Adam and Eve, mankind has discovered all physical laws are based upon mathematics. It is impossible to design a combustion engine without knowledge of the mathematical laws. When it comes to aircraft, it is necessary to know about the law of gravity and the mathematical laws that make it possible to overcome its downward pull.
When a supply rocket is sent to the International Space Station, it is necessary to calculate the trajectory so the rocket can meet the ISS at an intersecting point. The same holds true when a spacecraft is sent to the moon and Mars. We must determine the orbit and compute a route which intersects with the target.
Whatever we design must follow laws of mathematics, chemistry, electricity, gravity, etc. Nothing manufactured can bypass these physical laws defined by the Godhead. No designer can afford to be “liberal” in his work. Every mathematical law is precise, meaning there is only one correct answer. There is no room for false information.
Why are Christians so dense in refusing to believe the same holds true for spiritual laws?
SPIRITUAL LAWS
God’s spiritual laws supersede the physical laws, and when this occurs, we call it a miracle. They are just as precise as the physical laws. The Godhead adheres to these laws and the Devil, the fallen angels and all evil spirits are forced to submit to them as well. This is why Satan had to get permission to strike Job.
“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand.
So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.” (Job 1:6-12)
“Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.
And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.
But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.
And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.
So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.” (Job 2:1-7)
LAW TO MOSES
In presenting the law to Moses, Jesus stated that God the Father would abide with them to the letter and expected the people of Israel to do the same.
• Jesus gave the law.
• Jesus is enforcing the law.
• The Devil knows and uses the law to afflict people.
• You are cursed when you violate the law – willingly or ignorantly – opening yourself to legal attacks from the Devil.
Jesus personally delivered the spiritual law to Moses and the children of Israel, but before He did so, the Son of God called for the Israelites to enter a covenant that became known as the First Covenant.
1. Calling the people to come and enter into a covenant with God. Exodus 24:1-8
2. The leadership of Israel was invited to come partway up the mountain where they saw Jesus and were invited to a banquet. verses 9-11
3. Moses and Joshua were invited to come up even farther to receive the written laws of God. verses 12-17
4. Only Moses was allowed to enter into the glory cloud and see Jesus face-to- face. verse 18; Numbers 12:5-8
5. When Moses returned after 40 days in the presence of Jesus, the residual effects of the glory was so strong that he had to cover his face when meeting the people. Exodus 34:27-35
LAW STILL RELEVANT
Most Christians claim to be free from the Mosaic law, believing they no longer need to pay attention to the Old Testament responsibilities instituted by Jesus. In their defense, they like to misquote the apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans:
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” (Romans 8:1-2)
It is correct to say that Christians are set free from the law of death at the moment of salvation because we are no longer condemned to death. We have been effectively removed from death row. Our destination is now heaven, not the Lake of Fire.
The apostle John made it very clear that we keep the commandments of Jesus because we are saved, not to be saved.
“My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.” (1 John 2:1-6)
Jesus reinforced this thought process.
“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-19)
Jesus is still enforcing the Mosaic law today:
• You can be blessed. Deuteronomy 28:1-14
• You can be cursed. verses 15-68
As we have already observed, Satan must respect the law instituted by God. Job 1:6- 12; 2:1-7
You have a choice when it comes to blessings and curses. What will you do?
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” (Galatians 6:7-9)
Remember, it’s not so important how you begin your life after salvation, but how you finish it!
Do you have an ear to hear with?
