JESUS AND CHILDREN
Matthew, Mark and Luke recorded the only event when children were brought to Jesus. They were normally not allowed to attend public meetings and the apostles were upset when a number of children were brought forth to be blessed by the God-man. The apostles must have shouted at the parents to remove their children and stop wasting Jesus’ time. Matthew 19:13, Mark 10:13
There were infants among the group. Luke 18:15
Jesus expressed anger towards the poor attitude of the apostles and didn’t want the children sent away. He emphatically stated that children belong to the Kingdom of God and they should come to Him without hesitation. Matthew 19:14; Mark 10:14; Luke 18:16
Jesus laid hands on the children. Matthew 19:15
Jesus picked up the children one by one and blessed them. Mark 10:16
In order to be saved, a person has to come as a little child. Mark 10:15; Luke 18:17
This lines up with the teaching that a man must be born again to enter the Kingdom of heaven. John 3:1-8
EDUCATING CHILDREN
Jesus made it clear to Moses some 2,000 years earlier that children were important and there needed to be an educational system for them so they could learn early on about God, His commandments, and His interaction with humanity. Deuteronomy 6:3-9
Jesus never told the disciples to set up an educational program for the children since one already existed. Here is how children should learn about God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit:
1. It is the duty of parents to teach their children about the Bible and the story of Israel that led to the incarnation of Jesus. The God-man paid for mankind’s sins on the cross and was resurrected three days after the crucifixion. They need to understand salvation and how to be born again. Proverbs 22:6
2. Most Bible believing New Testament churches have a Sunday school program and other children’s programs. Parents should attend church with their children. The idea is not to send them to church and remain at home.
3. Create your own customized Sunday school program if there is no church in your area that preaches the Gospel.
4. Parents would do well to bring their children to Jesus at an early age. They need to teach and train their little ones about the Bible and the most important weapon in the Christian arsenal – prayer!
Remember, it’s not so important how you begin your life after salvation, but how you finish it!
