(Ahab & Jezebel)

THE CONFRONTATION
After 3.5 years Elijah was told to return to Israel and confront Ahab. 1 Kings 18:1-2

Ahab and his governor, Obadiah, were riding through the countryside searching for water. verses 3-6

Elijah met Obadiah. verses 7-16

As a man filled with evil spirits, Ahab blamed Elijah for the famine, conveniently ignoring the fact that he was to blame. verse 17; Deuteronomy 11:13-17

Elijah called for a showdown to see whether the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob or Baal was more powerful. It was a winner takes all contest. verses 18-46

JEZEBEL’S SATANIC POWER
When Jezebel heard about the God of Israel’s power display on Mount Carmel and how Elijah had slain 850 of the prophets of Baal, she flew into a rage and scared Elijah so badly that he fled for his life. 1 Kings 19:1-3

God sent an angel to comfort and strengthen Elijah. verses 5-8

NEW TASK
God had ordained two new kings; one for Israel and one for Syria. Elijah was to anoint the men with oil. verses 15-17

THE CALLING OF ELISHA
Elijah also called the man that should be his replacement. verses 18-21

VICTORY OVER SYRIA
Even though Ahab was a Baal worshipper, God gave him the victory over King Benhadad of Syria. 1 Kings 20:1-21

Benhadad returned a second time and was defeated again. verses 26-30

Ahab failed to kill the king of Syria and Jesus condemned him to death for his disobedience. verses 38-43

THE MURDER OF NABOTH
Instead of seeking the Lord and repenting, Ahab wanted a certain vineyard in the city of Samaria. He tried to buy it but the owner did not want to sell. Like a petulant child, Ahab returned home and moodily lay on his bed.

When he could not buy it, he went into a depression. When Jezebel saw that he was depressed, she ordered Naboth murdered and then told Ahab to take possession of the vineyard. 1 Kings 21:1-16

Elijah was sent once again to deliver bad news to Ahab from the Lord. verses 17-26

For the first time in his life, Ahab realized he had to repent, but it was too little and too late. verses 27-29

SUMMARY
Ahab was the son of Omri. His father was a murderer and he became one too. Omri was deeply involved with pagan worship and Ahab followed in his father’s footsteps.

Ahab accomplished nothing of value as a king of Israel; he wasted his time on earth. He had gold and silver but still died emptyhanded. He has been in hell for some 2,800 years now. He will be resurrected and judged at the Great White Throne Judgment and then cast into the Lake of Fire.

Ahab was a poster boy of a loser! He enjoyed money, fame and sexual gratification, but now all he has is pain while he sits in hell. His future is even more bleak with the Lake of Fire.

What about you? Are you born again? Are you walking with God? When your body dies, what will you bring with you into eternity? Mark 8:36-37

Remember, it’s not so important how you begin your life after salvation, but how you finish it!

Do you have an ear to hear with?
