THE SWORD WILL NEVER DEPART
When the Godhead paused the virtual time run, the last image on the screen showed tens of thousands of mutilated dead bodies of Ammonites. 2 Samuel 12:31
The Godhead had given King David the victory against a number of nations around Israel, and for the first time in its history, Israel’s borders were secured. But instead of being thankful, the children of David hated each other and plotted against each other. The curse of bigamy developed into rage. The Godhead decided not to intervene; David’s children would continue to exercise their free will.
INCEST, LIES AND MURDER
One of David’s sons, Amnon, lusted after his half-sister Tamar. His cousin Jonadab was also an evil man and they devised a way to lure Tamar to Amnon’s house where he could rape her. 2 Samuel 13:1-6
David received word that Amnon was sick and went to see him. David should have confronted Amnon about this absurd request. Why would Tamar need to come to Amnon’s private residence when there were servants available for such a task? It was like sending a lamb to a wolf and David enabled Amnon to rape his half-sister. verses 6-14
Amnon’s lust turned to hate and he dismissed Tamar, wanting nothing to do with her after he used her in such a manner. verses 15-17
David became angry, but took no action. verse 21
Absalom cared for Tamar and waited two years for revenge. He deceived his father and received permission to gather all the king’s sons together and Amnon was promptly assassinated. verses 24-29
Absalom fled to his grandparents in Geshur after the murder. David mourned for Ammon, then for Absalom, but there is no record of him giving comfort to Tamar. verses 37-39
Joab was in charge of the army. His mother was Zeruiah, who was a sister of David, making Joab a nephew to the king. He was a deceitful man and took it upon himself to return Absalom to Jerusalem. 2 Samuel 14:19-23
Instead of being thankful to be back in the graces of his father, Absalom worked diligently to undermine David. 2 Samuel 15:1-6
Absalom lied to David and asked for permission to go and sacrifice unto the Lord in Hebron. This was actually a ruse to start an insurrection against his father. verses 7-12
Fear gripped David as he fled with part of his family and army. verses 13-17
Joab eventually built up his forces and a battle was fought in which Absalom was killed and his army was scattered. 2 Samuel 18:5-16
JOAB CONFRONTS DAVID
Instead of rejoicing that Joab and the army had saved his life and that of his family, David mourned for Absalom. This made Joab furious and he told David to stop with this nonsense and speak to the people. 2 Samuel 19:1-8
SAUL’S SINFUL ACTIONS
When there was a famine in Israel, the Lord revealed it was because of King Saul’s sinful actions against the Gibeonites. Seven men from Saul’s family were subsequently handed over to the Gibeonites and hung. 2 Samuel 21:1-9
NUMBERING THE MEN OF ISRAEL
Despite Joab’s objection, David ordered a census of the people of Israel and the angel of the Lord killed 70,000 men as chastisement. 2 Samuel 24:1-4, 10-17
ADONIJAH PLOTS
David was weak and confined to his bedroom the last few months of his life. One of his sons, Adonijah, decided to jump to the front of the line and declare himself king. 1 Kings 1:1, 5-9
Nathan the prophet intervened and spoke to Bathsheba and David. verses 10-36
Solomon became the next king of Israel. verses 41-44
DAVID’S REVENGE
David called Solomon to his death bed and instructed him to kill Joab and Shimei.
2 Samuel 2:5-9
Joab was murdered in the tabernacle holding onto the horns of the altar. verses 28-34
Shimei was murdered three years later. verse 46
SUMMARY
There were two things that saved David from being rejected by the Godhead.
1. He was willing to repent when confronted over his sins.
2. He never committed idolatry and bowed his knees to demon gods.
David understood that God is our Creator and our time on earth is temporary. Psalm 103:14
Jesus will reign out of Jerusalem, king of the earth during the thousand-year kingdom in the future.
David will serve as a local regent and reign out of Jerusalem over the saved people from the twelve tribes of Israel. Ezekiel 37:22-28
Remember, it’s not so important how you begin your life after salvation, but how you finish it!
