A YOUNGER FOOL
The Godhead paused the virtual time run on the day King Solomon died. He had been bestowed with the gift of supernatural wisdom which he squandered and died in disgrace. Lucifer and his minions were jubilant that they had ruined another man of God and temporarily halted the road to the coming Redeemer.
Solomon’s oldest son was Rehoboam, a 41-year-old spoiled prince, was the son of Naamah, an Ammonite princess whom Solomon had married despite God’s prohibition on joining himself to heathen women. 1 Kings 14:21; 2 Chronicles 12:13; Deuteronomy 7:1-5
The Godhead knew about Rehoboam’s lavish lifestyle and they decided to let Rehoboam live out his life and make his own decisions. He was never going to be able to accuse the Godhead of not giving him a chance to rule as a king.
SPLIT KINGDOM
The ten northern tribes were not loyal to the house of David, and when Rehoboam was crowned king in Jerusalem, he had to travel to Shechem to be accepted by the ten northern tribes. 1 Kings 12:1
The political leaders of the northern tribes sent word to Egypt and asked Jeroboam to return to Israel and be their spokesman to King Rehoboam. This meant that Rehoboam had reigned in Jerusalem for at least several months since it would take time to send a messenger to Egypt and for Jeroboam to arrive to Shechem. verses-2-3
Rehoboam was told by the people that they wanted their taxes reduced, nor did they want to be drafted to be part of Solomon’s slave labor force. Rehoboam did not want to be backed into a corner and asked for three days to consult with his advisors. verses 4- 5
Rehoboam was given good advice by his father’s advisors. verses 6-7
Rehoboam did not appreciate the advice to lower taxes and put an end to the slave labor force since that would cut into the funds available to him. As a result, he sought guidance from inexperienced men of his own age who shared his own greed. They foolishly recommended to treat the people harsher than his father to show them who was boss. This would generate more income and increase the speed of the building projects. verses 8-11
Rehoboam was a fool for treating the people in such a manner. The result was that Jeroboam and the ten tribes told Rehoboam they were separating themselves to form their own kingdom. verses 15-16
Rehoboam foolishly sent his tax collector into the hostile territory of the ten northern tribes, and when he was subsequently stoned to death, Rehoboam fled to Jerusalem. verses 17-19
CIVIL WAR
Rehoboam decided to muster the armed forces of Judah and Benjamin to force the ten northern tribes to comply but Jesus sent a prophet to intervene. verses 21-24
GOLDEN CALVES
Lucifer wasted no time in corrupting Jeroboam. From having been a fine young man, he turned into a sleazy politician that was willing to use idolatry to solidify his grip on the northern kingdom. He set up two places of worship, each with a golden calf. 1 Kings 11:28; 12:25-33
WARNING FROM JESUS
The Godhead was not pleased with Jeroboam bringing idol worship back to Israel and Jesus sent a prophet to warn Jeroboam. 1 Kings 13:1-3
Jeroboam was going to have the prophet arrested, but upon raising his hand and speaking the command, his hand dried up and became useless. verses 4-5
He cried out to the Lord and was healed. Jeroboam offered the prophet dinner, which was politely refused because the Lord had instructed the prophet not to eat bread or drink water in the northern kingdom. verses 6-10
Lucifer used an old prophet in Bethel to trap the prophet from Judah, who fell for the temptation and consequently was killed. verses 11-23
Jesus prepared a lion to slay the prophet, but the animal did not eat him. verses 24-32
Despite supernatural intervention, Jeroboam did not return to the Lord and increased his sins. verses 33-34
DEATH OF A CHILD
The wages of sin is death. Jeroboam’s son became sick, but he had no intention of repenting. He wanted his son healed and told his wife to surreptitiously speak with a local prophet. Unbeknownst to them, God had already spoken to said prophet so that he knew exactly who she was even though she was disguised. 1 Kings 14:1-6
Instead of his son getting healed, Jeroboam was rebuked with the news that the northern kingdom was going to come to an end. verses 7-18
DEMISE OF JEROBOAM
A mill works slowly and methodically to grind grain. The end product is pulverized by the grinding and comes forth as a fine powder. It is the same with God. His promises are sure and true even if they take time to manifest. When Rehoboam died, Abijah, the great-grandson of King David began to reign. 2 Chronicles 13:1-2
Jesus used Abijah to wage war against Jeroboam and punish the ten northern tribes. verses 3-20
SUMMARY
God allowed Jeroboam to reign over the ten northern tribes for 22 years. 1 Kings 14:20
The Godhead realized the ten northern tribes were a lost cause. As a result, they were excluded from the effort to bring the Redeemer to the earth. The men of Israel were bent on sinning and worshiping at the altars of demon gods. They would be destroyed by their sins, scattered among the heathens, and end up in hell.
Humanity has a free will and most people will use it to embrace Lucifer. It would be another 174 years after the death of Jeroboam that the final judgment fell on the northern tribes when their land was taken and they were scattered in nations around them.
Remember, it’s not so important how you begin your life after salvation, but how you finish it!
