ESAU AND JACOB
The Bible doesn’t state why the Godhead created Esau and Jacob to be twins. As the older brother, Esau should have carried on the bloodline, but he sold his birthright as a young man. Genesis 25:29-34
Esau mocked God and married two Hittite women when he was 40 years old. Genesis 26:34-35
When Esau saw that his parents had sent Jacob to the family back east for a wife in the bloodline, he mocked God again by marrying the daughter of his uncle Ishmael. Genesis 28:6-9
SPECULATION
Abel was God’s secondary choice for the bloodline, but he was murdered by his brother and God replaced Abel with Seth, who became the patriarch that in time led to Noah, Shem, Terah, Abraham, and Isaac.
Esau and Jacob did not just happen by chance. When they were designed by the Godhead in eternity past, it was decided these two boys would be twins.
Here’s an interesting question. Is it possible that the Godhead’s original plan only called for two tribes to form the nation of Israel? Meaning there would have been the tribes of Esau and Jacob. If there would have been only two tribes, there would have been less bickering and infighting in Israel. As it turned out, the sons of Jacob were called to form the twelve tribes of Israel.
Esau willfully made choices that were wrong and he was removed from the bloodline for his actions. His sinful decisions would go on to negatively affect his descendants. Herod the Great was a descendant that was responsible for the murder of baby boys under the age of two in Bethlehem. Matthew 2:16-18
His grandson, Herod Agrippa I, ordered the murder of the apostle James and had the apostle Peter arrested with the intent to kill him too. An angel released Peter from prison and Herod Agrippa was later executed by an angel when he refused to give glory to God. Acts 12:1-9, 20-23
RECONCILIATION
Jacob knew that he had to move back to the land of Canaan. Genesis 31:13
Jacob had a debt to pay since he had taken advantage of Esau’s weakness. In order to strengthen Jacob, Jesus intervened to assure that returning to Canaan was the right thing to do. Genesis 32:1-2
Jacob was still conniving and worked out a plan to appease Esau who had settled in Edom. Genesis 32:3
Jacob did not know if Esau would attack his caravan, so he split into two groups, thinking that one part could escape if the other were attacked. On top of this, he sent out bribes in waves in an effort to soften his brother’s heart. verses 4-23
Jacob was in turmoil and slept alone that night. Jesus visited sometime during the night and Jacob got physical with Him and wrestled God the Son throughout the night until the sun rose. Jesus admired his determination and changed his name. verses 24-32
Esau and Jacob finally reconciled after many years of strife. Genesis 33:1-16
However, there was no reconciliation for Esau with God. It’s a harsh thing for God to state that He hates someone. This is what happened with Esau. Yet the Godhead was justified because they saw the poor intentional decisions Esau made in the virtual time run and they were so angry with him that they refused to forgive him when he sought forgiveness later in life. Romans 9:13; Hebrews 12:15-17
